A steel producer experienced significant dust generation on its access and haul roads. The roads had to be watered several times per day, which involved the cost of operating and maintaining four water trucks continuously. More importantly, the dust level often exceeded an acceptable health and safety level.

Veolia analyzed traffic frequency, vehicle size, road characteristics, water truck operation, and environmental conditions to recommend an appropriate dust control program. The road dust program consisted of specific mechanical road preparation, a base treatment of DusTreat binding agent, and maintenance treatments of DusTreat wetting and binding agents.

Mechanical road surface preparation is essential for a road dust control treatment to be effective. For this surface, the preparation consisted of surface scarification to 2 inches, base treatment application of the binding agent of 0.20 gallons/yd 2 , and occasional maintenance treatment of 0.01 gallon/yd 2 .

结果

The road dust program was developed specifically for the hydrophobic nature of this road’s surface and the spillage associated with slag transport. The initial treatment program provided excellent performance during the first month, only requiring maintenance treatment after that. Figures 1 and 2 show the dust conditions before and after the implementation of the DusTreat program.

Based on the costs associated with operating the water trucks, road maintenance, and labor, the steel producer estimated annual cost savings of US $5,600 per mile per year.
